Honing of liners

Cylinder liners play a key role in engine performance, sealing and lubrication. At Nicoverken, we provide precision honing of cylinder liners for marine and industrial diesel engines. Our honing process restores the correct surface finish and geometry, ensuring optimal piston ring sealing and efficient lubrication.

Exchange base & stock availability

In certain cases, Nicoverken can supply cylinder liners from stock or provide exchange solutions to reduce downtime. This allows engines to be returned to service quickly without waiting for extended machining or repair times.
All liners supplied or reconditioned are honed according to specification and inspected to ensure correct fit and performance.

Key benefits:

  • Minimal downtime
  • Precision-finished liners/li>
  • Consistent quality and reliability
  • Suitable for various engine types
Step by step

What do we do when honing a liner

Our liner honing process is carried out with high-precision equipment and strict control to achieve the correct surface finish. This process ensures proper lubrication, reduced wear and reliable long-term engine operation.

1
Initial inspection of the liner condition

Each cylinder liner is carefully inspected for wear, scoring, corrosion and other visible damage. This initial assessment determines whether the liner is suitable for honing.

2
Measurement of liner diameter and geometry

The liner is measured using precision equipment to verify its diameter, roundness and straightness. These measurements ensure that the liner is within the allowable specifications before machining begins.

3
Precision honing to restore the surface

The honing process removes minor imperfections and restores the liner's surface finish. This creates the correct geometry required for efficient piston ring sealing.

4
Creation of the correct cross-hatch pattern

A precise cross-hatch pattern is produced during honing to promote proper oil retention and lubrication. This surface finish helps reduce wear and improves engine performance.

5
Final measurement and verification

After honing, the liner is measured again to confirm that all critical dimensions meet the required specifications. This ensures a consistent and accurate result.

6
Cleaning and preparation for assembly

Once the honing process is complete, the liner is thoroughly cleaned to remove any remaining honing residue. The liner is then prepared for installation or further assembly.

Quality control & testing

Quality control is an integral part of our honing process. Each liner is inspected to ensure compliance with required specifications.

Our quality checks include:

  • Verification of liner dimensions and roundness
  • Inspection of cross-hatch angle and surface finish
  • Final visual and technical inspection

Only liners that meet our quality standards are approved for delivery or installation.

Applications

Our honing of liners services are suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

Main engines
Auxiliary engines
Marine diesel engines
Generator sets
Indusrtial Power Unites
