Crankshaft grinding

The crankshaft is one of the most critical components of a diesel and/ or natural gas engine, transferring power and ensuring smooth engine operation. At Nicoverken, we provide precision crankshaft grinding services for marine and industrial diesel and natural gas engines. Our grinding process restores correct dimensions, surface finish and alignment, ensuring reliable and safe engine performance.

Exchange base & stock availability

Depending on engine type and application, Nicoverken can offer crankshafts from stock or exchange solutions to minimize downtime. Used crankshafts can be returned and replaced with fully reconditioned units that are ready for installation.

All exchange crankshafts are inspected, machined and prepared according to specification before delivery.

Key benefits:

  • Reduced engine downtime
  • Precision-machined crankshafts
  • Cost-effective alternative to new components
  • Reliable and ready for installation
Step by step

What do we do when grinding a crankshaft

Our crankshaft grinding process is performed with high-precision equipment and strict quality control. This process ensures correct bearing fit, smooth rotation and long-term engine reliability.

1
Initial inspection of the crankshaft

The crankshaft is thoroughly inspected for wear, scoring, cracks and other visible damage. This initial assessment determines whether the crankshaft is suitable for reconditioning.

2
Measurement of journals and alignment

All main journals and crankpin journals are measured using precision equipment to verify dimensions, roundness and alignment. These measurements determine the required machining process.

3
Detection of wear and surface defects

The journals are carefully inspected for scratches, pitting and other surface imperfections. Any defects are assessed to ensure they can be removed while remaining within the manufacturer's specifications.

4
Precision grinding of main and crankpin journals

The journals are precision ground to restore the correct dimensions and surface finish. This ensures proper bearing contact and smooth engine operation.

5
Restoration of the correct surface finish

After grinding, the journal surfaces are finished to achieve the required surface roughness. A high-quality finish reduces friction and promotes optimal bearing performance.

6
Final dimensional verification

Once the grinding process is complete, all critical dimensions are measured again to confirm compliance with the required specifications. A final inspection ensures the crankshaft is ready for reliable service.

Quality control & testing

Quality control is an essential part of crankshaft grinding. Each crankshaft is inspected to ensure compliance with required specifications.

Our quality checks include:

  • Dimensional and roundness verification
  • Inspection of surface finish
  • Alignment and run-out checks on supports
  • Hardness check
  • MPI check for crackindication detection
  • Final visual and technical inspection
  • ‘before’measurement report

Only crankshafts that meet our quality standards are approved for delivery.

Applications

Our piston overhauling services are suitable for a wide range of applications, including:

Main engines
Auxiliary engines
Marine diesel engines
Generator sets
Indusrtial Power Unites
